Every domain has contact details recorded with the registry. Keeping them accurate is a condition of holding the domain, not just good practice.
Why it matters
- Renewal and expiry warnings go to the contact address.
- Transfer approvals go to the administrative contact.
- Registries can suspend a domain with details they find to be false.
- If you lose access to the contact address, recovering the domain gets much harder.
Updating them
Open Domains in your Client Area and open the domain to see its contact details. Some endings require a verification step after a change to the registrant name or email - respond to it, because ignoring it can suspend the domain.
Changing the registrant
Changing who owns the domain is a heavier process than changing an address, and for some endings it restarts the 60-day transfer lock. Plan it, rather than doing it the week you want to move.
Privacy
Some endings publish contact details publicly and offer a privacy service that substitutes proxy details. .uk domains have their own arrangement for non-trading individuals. Ask us what applies to your domain.
Use an address that outlives people
Use a role address you control, not a personal one belonging to whoever happened to register it. Domains outlast jobs.
