A subdomain is a name in front of your domain - shop.example.com, blog.example.com, staging.example.com. It can serve a different site from your main one.
Creating one
- Sign in and choose Services.
- Open your hosting service and choose Advanced Control.
- Find the domains area and add a subdomain.
- Enter the prefix and confirm where its files should live.
If the domain's DNS is with us, the record is created for you. If DNS is elsewhere, add a record there pointing the subdomain at your hosting.
Common uses
- A staging copy of a site, kept away from the live one
- A separate shop or blog
- A landing page for a campaign
- A client area or documentation site
Certificates
A subdomain needs its own certificate coverage before it will load over HTTPS. Allow a short time after creating it, and see Understanding SSL certificates on your hosting.
Keep staging out of search results
A public staging subdomain can be indexed and compete with your real site. Put it behind a password, or block indexing on it.
